Pukupi Redesign
19 Oct 2009
I'm very happy to announce a new Pukupi site design has been launched today. A lot has changed under the hood that I hope improves the user experience and I would greatly appreciate any feedback in the comments.
New feed location
The Pukupi feed has moved to here. Apache's handling the redirect but you may want to manually update the location if you subscribe to the Pukupi feed.
Mobile Codeatron has been updated
The Mobile Codeatron QR code generator has had a major update with improved support for QR code capable mobiles outside Japan.
Mimic is no more
My i-mode emulator has been retired.
Goodbye Internet Explorer 6
IE 6 users were never a big part of the Pukupi audience so the new site design no longer accommodates an 8 year old browser that sucks all the awesomeness out of the web. Apart from a friendly warning message, Pukupi looks really, really bad in IE 6.
This was an incredibly liberating design decision and based on the experience, I could probably cut front end design time in half if I had the same freedom in outside projects.
Mobile version
The mobile version hasn't been switched on yet as I'm still testing Docomo's new JavaScript and CSS capabilities.
Very clean design but I still have to use IE6 in the office :(
I could alter the new design to work with IE 6; it would require some compromises, code bloat and time but if real IE 6 users were more than the 1% of traffic (some bots masquerade as IE 6), this is definitely something I would consider.
As it stands, the majority of Pukupi traffic comes from Firefox users and it has been refreshing to build a redesign that could take advantage of the capabilities of this and other modern browsers.
Test alignment on the navigation tabs has been tweaked thanks to a suggestion from @boblet.
