Softbank gets all touchy-feely with their latest mobiles; shows Apple a thing or two
Softbank has gone all touchy-feely with their Winter 2008
mobile collection including several touch screen mobiles which borrow a lot from the iPhone but also offer some features I'd love to see Apple roll into the iPhone sometime soon. My pick of the bunch is the 931SH
with a gorgeous 480 x 1024 touch screen interface and specs that make the iPhone look very old.

Nokia's E71 also makes an appearance for people out there who prefer real keyboards. More pictures and details of the entire collection are available here

Stop calling Safari on the iPhone a mobile browser!
Can everyone please stop referring to Safari on the iPhone as a mobile browser because it has none of the capabilities of a mobile browser, OK.
Docomo Home U and Softbank's missed opportunity
Docomo has beaten Softbank on the fixed-mobile convergence front by announcing its Home U service which basically allows users to connect their mobile through wifi to access Docomo services and, most importantly, place VoIP calls.
This is hardly revolutionary but a big deal in a country with control freak carriers but I always thought Softbank would be the first to roll out this service: Softbank and its Yahoo! BB ISP already have an extensive broadband network in place using wifi routers and offering VoIP calls.
Softbank really dropped the ball on this one.

Docomo announces the 906 and 706 series mobiles
It's that crazy time of the year when the big three start rolling out summer mobiles and Docomo kicks it off announcing no less than 19 mobiles making up the 906 and 706 series.
Apart from the usual incremental increase in specs over the 905 and 705 series, the most interesting new feature is an expanded full browser with Windows Media Video and Flash 8 support. I'm not sure how well desktop Flash navigation will translate to a mobile browser but with already impressive AJAX capabilities in the 905 full browsers, Docomo is stepping up to the competition from Apple's Webkit and Opera Mobile.
