Docomo Home U and Softbank's missed opportunity
Docomo has beaten Softbank on the fixed-mobile convergence front by announcing its Home U service which basically allows users to connect their mobile through wifi to access Docomo services and, most importantly, place VoIP calls.
This is hardly revolutionary but a big deal in a country with control freak carriers but I always thought Softbank would be the first to roll out this service: Softbank and its Yahoo! BB ISP already have an extensive broadband network in place using wifi routers and offering VoIP calls.
Softbank really dropped the ball on this one.
