An infrequent log of anything but not everything in my mobile world.

Bar code reading mobiles revisited

Version 2 of my QR code

While I was up in Tokyo yesterday avoiding the long queue at the opening of the Ginza Apple Store, I noticed Docomo is now plastering all their publications with previously blogged QR codes.

Docomo has also released i-mode QR code specifications Japanese outlining a propriety format for storing everything from contact information to image data in QR code. The F505i, SH505i, SH252i, and all 505iS series mobiles support QR code reading.

Scanning QR code of the text below (without line breaks) allows any suitably equipped i-mode mobile to add my contact details to their address book:
MECARD:
N:Kyle Barrow;
TEL:xxxxxxxxxxx;
EMAIL:xxxxxx@pukupi.com;
;
You can also combine elements within a single QR code:
MATMSG:
TO:xxxxxx@pukupi.com;
;
MEBKM:
TITLE:pukupi;
URL:http\://pukupi.com;
;
QR code of the above text (also without line breaks) offers the option to either create an email message or bookmark this site.

If you haven't already forked out hard cold cash for QR code creation software, Docomo provides QR Factory Japanese free. This Windows software allows you to easily produce QR code following i-mode specifications and although the site is in Japanese, the software includes an English interface.
